Three Tips for Buying Your First Vehicle

Three Tips for Buying Your First Vehicle

If you're in the market for a new vehicle and this is your first time buying, here are some tips that may help.

Buying a vehicle is always a big deal and your first car is a significant step. It's normal to be a little nervous when shopping for a vehicle the first time. Is the price right? Is the vehicle reliable? Is it the right vehicle for me? These are all valid questions that need to be answered. Here are some tips to help you answer these questions and find the right vehicle for your needs.

Calculate your budget

The first step when buying a vehicle, especially your first vehicle, is to calculate your budget. If you're paying cash, make sure you factor in taxes and registration. If you're financing, calculate your monthly budget which includes the monthly payment, but also gas, insurance and other fees like parking if applicable. That said, you also want to factor in future costs for maintenance, tires and repairs.

Choosing the right vehicle... for your needs

Once you have your budget established, you move on to selecting your next vehicle. First, you need to identify your needs in terms of space, handling, style, performance and equipment. We usually have a good idea of the type of vehicle we want (used truck, used SUV, etc.), but the key is to find the vehicle that will not only meet your needs today, but also in the future. If you're planning on starting a family in the next few years, maybe that two-door coupe isn't the best option. If you're planning to move to the city in a year, maybe a truck isn't ideal. In short, think about your immediate needs and, more importantly, how those needs might change in the future.

Choosing the right vehicle... for our budget

It is also important to choose a vehicle that fits your budget. Price is one thing, but we also want to choose an economical and reliable vehicle to keep our ownership costs low.
